The 2020 edition of the European Union Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard comprises of the 2,500 private-sector companies investing the largest sums in research and development in the world. These companies, based in 43 countries, invested a total of €904.2 billion in 2019.
The amount of R&D investment by these companies is equivalent to more than 60% of the total expenditure on R&D worldwide, and to around 90% of the R&D expenditure financed by the business sector worldwide.
The Scoreboard includes 161 biopharmaceuticals manufacturers, contributing a total of €166.8 billion in research and development – 18.5% of the global estimate. The sector is the one of the most research-intensive in the world. Twenty-four of the Top-100 innovative companies in the world are drugmakers.
The reference period for the 2020 Scoreboard is the year 2019, thus the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are not yet reflected in the dataset.
