A possible transatlantic contribution to Beneluxa by Canada.

The Netherlands is spearheading an effort to have Canada sign up to the Beneluxa initiative on medicines.

Beneluxa is an international alliance for pharmaceutical policy composed of Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. Medicine pricing is one of the pillars of Beneluxa along with other areas such as horizon scanning - the International Horizon Scanning Initiative (IHSI).

Horizon scanning aims to highlight important pharmaceutical and medical technology innovations before they reach the market  by continuously gathering data and analyzing research and literature. This improves insight in expected costs and enables timely decision making and (joint) price negotiations.

Last month, the Dutch Minister for Medical Care, Bruno Bruins, announced that Canada would become a member of IHSI. This month, Bruins announced plans for Sweden to join the initiative. The Dutch minister is hopeful that 10 countries will join the Initiative when it kicks off in October.
